Artist's Description
A colorful painting of an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) in bright rainbow colors with a vibrant multicolored background. Acrylic painting on a 11" x 14" wood panel, finished August 12, 2022. I used a lot of fluorescent paints with this one, so the real life painting is actually much more vibrant, especially the red/orange areas, which seem to glow!
Box turtles are one of my all time favorite animals! Even though they look like tortoises, they are actually closely related to water turtles such as the painted turtle and red eared slider. They can be very colorful, with yellow and/or orange on a dark brown or black background, with the males typically more colorful than the females. Males also tend to have bright red eyes. This artwork was based on the photograph by Richard Coldiron with permission.
